LinkedIn: Using the ‘Open to’ feature

In recent years, LinkedIn has launched a feature called ‘Open to’ which lets recruiters know you are #OpenToWork.

If you are in the market for a new job, it is by no means the only job hunting method at your disposal, but it can be a useful tool to help you be found by recruiters. It would be a good idea to have your profile up-to-date when activating this feature.

Before you add this feature to your profile, make sure you have chosen your preferred setting for who can see that you are #OpenToWork. You could end up with some explaining to do if you choose the wrong one! If you choose the Recruiters Only option, LinkedIn have stated that they will only allow recruiters to see that you’re ‘open to’ looking for new jobs and they have taken steps to prevent recruiters from the organisation you currently work for from seeing that your profile is set to open. If you select ‘All LinkedIn members’ then your profile picture will be updated with #OpenToWork and all your contacts and wider LinkedIn community will see this too.

The video below demonstrates how to activate the feature on your LinkedIn profile and also how to set your job preferences.

CAO: Statement of Application Record

The CAO or Central Applications Office oversee the application process for undergraduate courses in Irish third-level Institutions. Anyone who wishes to apply to an undergraduate level 6, 7 or 8 course at a University in Ireland, needs to complete a CAO application.

During the month of May, the CAO send out a ‘statement of application record’ email to everyone who has made an application.  It’s really important that applicants check this email and follow the instructions given!

The CAO have provided a helpful video that explains how to check if your application is in order. They have also provided an instructions page detailing how to check your own application and make changes. In addition, they have provided answers to frequently asked questions.

Some of the details the CAO ask applicants to inspect include:

  • Personal Details – have you spelled your name correctly, is your date of birth recorded accurately, have you listed your place of birth correctly?  Have you used an email address that you will continue to have access to over the summer?
  • Examination details – If studying the Leaving Cert in 2022, have you listed the correct examination number?  If you are applying on the basis of QQI results, have you included your PPS number?  For all qualifications, you have mentioned, have you included the correct year, type of exam, examination number, and for any already completed, the subjects/levels/grades relevant to what you have studied?
  • Exemptions: If you have an Irish exemption, have you notified the CAO about this, and is it visible on your application?
  • Supporting Documents: if you have sent any supporting documents to the CAO, these should now be visible in the ‘Supporting Documents Section’ so make sure to have a look to ensure these are accurate.
  • Course Choices – are the courses you have listed in genuine order of preference?  Have you double-checked the code listed on your application corresponds to the course you want to study? Use the CAO/Careers Portal/Qualifax or relevant University Website to confirm the correct code. From the 5th May until 5pm on 1st July you can change your course choices, free of charge (subject to certain restrictions, see CAO handbook).

If you made your CAO application a few months ago, there may be new courses added recently that weren’t available when you made your initial application or courses that have been discontinued. You can see any changes on the Important Changes page.

Use the CAO interactive handbook or flipbook to help you also. If you have any questions not answered by the CAO handbook, videos or website pages, you can contact the CAO directly using their website. They will usually respond within about 24 hours.
