Cover Letters in 4 Easy Steps

I’ve been revisiting how to write cover letters over the past few days in preparation for a workshop I’m running later this week. I thought I’d summarise how to go about it as it can be confusing. I’m aware that this is often an overlooked part of the job application process. It has been said it’s even become outdated, however in my opinion it’s still relevant as it’s another way to help your application stand out.

How to do it?

Step 1: Use formal business layout – your address and today’s date on the right-hand side, the employer’s address on the left.  Try to address your letter to a named person at the organisation you are applying to. Include the Job Title and Advert Reference numbers, where you saw the position advertised and politely state your interest in the role. If you are emailing or uploading your letter to the employer, make sure to save it as a PDF document so that it stays looking the way you intend it to.

Step 2: Include a paragraph about who you are and why you are a suitable candidate for the job.  To do this, look at the advert and write about how your previous experience matches what the advert is looking for.  Tell them about any achievements you’ve had in your past jobs e.g. how have you saved time/money or effort for your past employers?

Step 3: Include a paragraph about why you want to work for the organisation.  What is it about the organisation that appeals to you?  Tell them why you’d like the job and why you want to work for this employer, describing what motivates and attracts you to the position. Include genuine reasons as you may be asked about these at interview, and talk about what you have found out about them in your research.

Step 4: Finish your letter with a positive and optimistic statement thanking them for their time, stating your availability for interview, and finish with the correct sign-off.

I hope this has helped clarify the steps involved in composing a Cover Letter. To help you find inspiration on what to write, you can find some good example letters and templates online. I’ve included some links below to help you get started.
